Amy Blog #1, 5/15/06

This will only be a short email about our travels because we have been having fun and been very very far away. But Craig and I would like to encourage all of our friends to come to Bali, ASAP and take a side trip or two to other parts of Indonesia. We feel so welcomed in Bali, and it is a very special place with a unique perspective on our world. And venturing out into muslim Indonesia, we still felt welcomed and had some rollicking and very unusual good times on the island of Sulawesi. The trip was both luxurious and inexpensive and inspirational and adventurous, all of these are places to take advantage of.

Basically we had 4 little vacations - (1) the trip over, with an afternoon in Singapore; (2) a 4 day getaway with massages and diving in the perfectly restful beach resort of Pumetaran, north Bali; (3) a 4 day getaway to the mountains of Sulawesi (Celebes), part of the spice islands and the home of the ancient culture of Tana Toraja, where we got to party with Dodo the Pen Man, a kind muslim man from South Sulawesi who is probably the best guide and instant friend we'll ever have, and his pal Yatim; and (4) 3 nights and days of festivals and shopping and eating in Ubud, Bali for the annual festivals of Gunungan and Kuningan, which span a 10 day period when the spirits are allowed to visit the villages and show the Balinese once again that the balance of good and evil remains, no winners or losers, but with the powers of good defending us as much as possible in the balance. We also had the biggest variety of massages we could imagine: restful foot and back massages in the Japanese-inspired airport massage parlor in Singapore, lovely 90 minute massages daily in the splendidly comfortable small hotel of Pondok Sari in Pemuteran, with lovely indonesian girls who never even told us their names; a spice massage by a tiny mountain man in Sulawesi; and a brutal but fabulous reflexology foot massage in the airport in Sulawesi. We hope to get a couple more on our way home. The most we paid was about $20 in Singapore, the least was $3.50 for reflexology, the average was $12, it was all good.

I can say that in spite of the long plane ride to get here, this 12 day vacation was immediately magical and restful, and relatively inexpensive. I will write about all of these soon and Craig has a blog site we will activate, with pictures, and info about hotels, costs and traveling, when we return.
